Invasion of the Omegas
When I was younger I would spend my holidays with my Nana. Anyone that knows me and my family knows how much of a health nut my Nana is. For as long as I can remember she was always obsessed with buying organic food and insisted on cooking every meal, which for a kid who just wanted a McDonald's every now and then was hell!!
Healthy home cooked meals were not the only necessity at my Nana's every holiday, but a daily dose of many health supplements such as Scotts Emulsion (Yuk, this is the foulest tasting supplement I ever took, still brings back nightmares just mentioning it), good old trust Seven Seas multi-vitamins and a spoonful of Seven Seas Cod liver oil. Whilst I never loved taking the supplements, I did get used to taking the Cod liver oil with an orange, as Nana promised strong bones when I reached her old age and long flowing hair.
As I got older, I stopped taking Seven Seas and did miss the benefits good omega oils in my diet.
Why are Omega's important to your diet? Well for one thing, they certainly promise to help keep your heart working normally by maintaining healthy levels of fat in the blood cells. It also aids the maintenance and development of normal brain function, can also help keep your moods more balanced. Here are some more benefits listed below:
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Some Cancers
- Skin Disorders
- High Cholesterol
- High Blood Pressure
- Attention Disorders
- Depressive Disorders
- Macular Degeneration
- Digestive Difficulties
So on my quest of looking for a better quality fish oil to take, I recently discovered two different brands that offer different ways of getting the all important nutrients.
Lion Heart - Bare Biology
I discovered Lion Heart - Bare Biology in Liberty of London. I had the chance to meet the owner of the company there who discussed how the fish is farmed from clean water sources and they are able to get the fish oil from sardines, mackerel and anchovies. This oil also contains vitamin E and is flavoured by natural Sicilian Lemon oil. It doesn't have the heavy texture or harsh taste like the Seven Seas and contains a high amount of omega 3.
You take one teaspoon a day. This contains a higher amount of EPA, which contributes more to the development function of the brain. Where as DHA contributes more to the development of your vision. I prefer the oil because I find that tablets always get stuck in my chest and I find it repeating on me. But Lion Heart is also available in capsule form.
This oil is £47.00 in Liberty London. Though it is quite expensive, I definitely see it is a better quality oil than Seven seas.
Udo's Choice
The other oil that I came upon is Udo's Choice. This is a little thicker in texture, but can be used in salads and also incorporated into your morning smoothies to give a richer creamier taste.
I did like Udo's choice for its versatility and it is a great alternative for Vegan's as it is made from the following oils:
- Flax seed oil
- Sesame seed oil
- Coconut oil
- Sunflower oil
- Evening Primrose oil
This oil is a lot cheaper than the Lion Heart fish oil, and is priced at £11.99 for 250ml so is the cheaper alternative.
I continue to alternate, depending on my budget between the two. Let me know what oils you have tried.
